Byzantine Baths

The great public baths shrank, the church disapproved, and bathing survived anyway. Byzantine bath architecture, monastic rules on washing, the imperial baths, and the Ottoman inheritance.

The Roman bath was a civic institution on a monumental scale: vast heated halls, cold plunge pools, exercise grounds, libraries, gardens, and a social function that had little to do with getting clean. Constantinople inherited the type — the Baths of Zeuxippos, built by Septimius Severus and rebuilt by Constantine, held a celebrated collection of eighty ancient bronze statues and was one of the sights of the city.

Over the following centuries the institution shrank, changed and partly survived, and the way it did so is a good index of what happened to Byzantine urban life generally.

The Decline of the Great Baths

The great imperial thermae depended on three things: enormous quantities of water, enormous quantities of fuel, and public funding.

All three came under pressure from the seventh century. Aqueducts were cut by besiegers and not always repaired — the Aqueduct of Valens was severed by the Avars in 626 and not fully restored until Constantine V’s programme in the 760s. Fuel meant wood, and the timber supply around large cities was finite. And the municipal budgets that had maintained civic buildings disappeared as the empire’s cities contracted.

The Zeuxippos was burnt in the Nika riots of 532, rebuilt, and by the eighth century was being used as a prison and workshop space. The pattern repeats across the empire: huge bath complexes abandoned, subdivided, quarried for material, or converted.

What Replaced Them

Bathing did not stop. It moved into smaller, cheaper buildings — the balaneion rather than the thermai — and a great many of these are attested in the sources and increasingly in archaeology.

A middle Byzantine bath was typically a compact structure with three or four rooms: a changing room, a warm room, a hot room over a hypocaust, and sometimes a cold plunge. Heated by a furnace at one end, vaulted, lit by glazed oculi in the domes, it served a neighbourhood or a monastery rather than a city.

The plan is the direct ancestor of the Ottoman hamam, and the continuity is not merely typological: Ottoman baths in Istanbul and the Balkans were often built on Byzantine foundations by builders working in the same tradition, as Constantinople to Istanbul notes. The hamam is the Roman bath that survived, via Byzantium.

Private baths existed in wealthy houses and in the Great Palace, where the imperial bath complexes were among the most luxurious spaces in the empire, described in the ceremonial books with attention to which officials attended the emperor at which stage.

The Church’s Ambivalence

Christian writers were divided about bathing, and the division is more interesting than a simple prohibition would be.

The objections were three: the nakedness, the mixing of the sexes (which imperial and canon law repeatedly forbade and therefore repeatedly failed to prevent), and the association of bodily pleasure with luxury and effeminacy. Ascetic writers made alousia — not washing — a mark of holiness, and the hagiographies contain a good deal of admiring description of saints who had not bathed in decades.

Against this stood the plain fact that washing is healthy, which Byzantine physicians working in the Galenic tradition asserted constantly. Bathing was part of the standard therapeutic regimen, and monastic rules that discouraged it for the healthy generally mandated it for the sick.

The typika are precise about this. The Pantokrator charter allows the monks a bath once a month and the hospital patients as needed. Other houses permit two or three baths a year, or restrict them to Lent and Easter, or allow them only on a physician’s instruction.

The pattern is not prohibition but regulation: bathing for health, yes; bathing for pleasure, no. In practice the distinction was as porous as such distinctions always are.

The Bath in the City

For the ordinary inhabitant of a Byzantine city, the bath remained a normal amenity. Baths appear in property deeds, in wills, in monastic estate records as income-producing assets, and in the regulations of the city prefect.

They also appear in the literature as social space. The twelfth-century satirical poems complain about them; saints’ lives use them as settings for encounters; and legal texts deal with thefts from changing rooms, a perennial problem that Roman law had also addressed.

Entrance fees were small. Baths were often endowed for free public use by a founder, alongside a church or hospital, as an act of charity.

Water

None of it worked without water, and Constantinople’s supply was an engineering achievement described in the Basilica Cistern: aqueducts running more than 400 kilometres into Thrace, open reservoirs, and over a hundred covered cisterns beneath the city.

Provincial cities managed on a smaller scale with local springs, wells and cisterns. The reduction in bath sizes after the seventh century tracks the difficulty of maintaining long-distance water supply as closely as it tracks anything else.

What Survives

Byzantine baths are archaeologically underrepresented, partly because they are hard to distinguish from Ottoman ones, and partly because they were routinely rebuilt.

Identifiable examples exist in Constantinople, Thessalonica — where a Byzantine bath of the twelfth or thirteenth century survives near the upper town and remained in use until 1940 — Mystras, Cyprus, and various Anatolian sites. The Thessalonica bath is the best-preserved Byzantine example anywhere and is worth seeking out: a small vaulted structure with the standard three-room sequence, and an object lesson in how modest the successor to the imperial thermae had become.

The Larger Point

The history of the Byzantine bath is a compressed version of the history of the Byzantine city. A monumental, publicly funded, classical institution shrinks to a small, privately or monastically owned, functional one; the practice continues, the scale collapses; and the surviving form passes intact to the next civilisation on the same ground.

Anyone who has been to a Turkish bath has been in a Roman one, through a Byzantine intermediary, and the sequence of rooms has not changed in eighteen centuries.

How a Byzantine Bath Worked

The mechanics were Roman and survived essentially unchanged into the Ottoman period, which is why a Turkish bath is legible to anyone who has read about a Roman one.

The furnace (praefurnium) at one end burned wood, heating a boiler and driving hot gases under the floor.

The hypocaust: the floor of the heated rooms was raised on short pillars of stacked tile (pilae), so hot air circulated beneath it. Flues built into the walls (tubuli, hollow box tiles) carried the gases up and out, heating the walls as well as the floor.

The sequence of rooms: a changing room (apodyterion), a warm room (tepidarium), a hot room (caldarium) nearest the furnace with a hot plunge or basin, and often a cold room (frigidarium) with a cold plunge.

The procedure: undress, warm gradually, sweat in the hot room, be scraped and oiled or soaped, wash, then cool down in reverse order. The Byzantine bath added soap, which the Romans had largely lacked, and reduced the exercise ground and the social apparatus.

The floor of a hot room was too hot to stand on barefoot, which is why bathers wore wooden pattens — a detail that survives in Ottoman practice and is attested in Byzantine sources.

Fuel was the limiting factor. A bath of any size consumed timber continuously, and the contraction of bath sizes after the seventh century tracks the cost of wood near shrinking cities as closely as it tracks the water supply.

Monastic Rules, Quoted

The typika are specific about bathing, and setting a few provisions side by side shows the range of practice better than a generalisation.

The Pantokrator typikon of 1136 allows the monks a bath once a month, and provides for the sick as often as the physicians direct.

Other foundations are stricter: several allow two or three baths a year; some restrict them to before Christmas and Easter; a few prohibit them for the healthy entirely while mandating them for the ill.

The Evergetis typikon and its many derivatives take a middle position, permitting bathing on medical advice and discouraging it otherwise.

The common structure across all of them is the distinction between bathing for health, which is permitted and sometimes required, and bathing for pleasure, which is not. The rules also invariably require that monks bathe separately and covered, and forbid the communal nakedness of the Roman bath.

Athonite practice was and remains the strictest. Ascetic literature treats alousia, not washing, as a spiritual discipline, and some hagiographies record saints who did not bathe for decades — reported admiringly, which indicates the register in which the practice was understood.

From Balaneion to Hamam

The continuity between the Byzantine bath and the Ottoman one is a well-documented case of institutional survival across a conquest, and the evidence is architectural.

The Ottoman hamam has the same sequence of rooms — soğukluk, ılıklık, sıcaklık — heated the same way, with a hypocaust and wall flues, a domed hot room with a central heated marble platform, and glazed oculi in the domes for light.

Several Istanbul hamams stand on Byzantine foundations or incorporate Byzantine fabric. Ottoman architects and builders in the decades after 1453 were working in a city full of functioning and derelict Byzantine baths, and the type they produced is a refinement rather than an import.

The one substantial Ottoman addition is the göbek taşı, the heated central slab on which bathers lie to sweat and be scrubbed, which has no clear Byzantine precedent.

The cultural framing changed more than the architecture. Islamic ritual ablution gave the bath a religious function it had not had, and the hamam became a fixture of the mosque complex — endowed alongside it, its revenues supporting the foundation. What had been a civic amenity in decline became a religious necessity, and the building type survived because of it.
